Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean Sea that forms a constituent country of the kingdom of the Netherlands. Curaçao was the capital of the Netherlands Antilles (Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, Saba, Sint Maarten) prior to its dissolution in 10-10-2010.

The island is 64 km long and between 4 to 14km wide, it has an estimated population of 160.000.

Curaçao is a polyglot society. The official languages are Dutch, Papiamentu and English. Most of Curaçao's population is able to converse in at least two of the languages of Papiamentu, Dutch, English, and Spanish. Willemstad is home to the Curaçao synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas. The city Centre, with its unique architecture and harbor entry, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
