Fort Amsterdam is also located in Punda, Fort Amsterdam was the first of many strongholds built here by the Dutch in the 17th century. The fort contained wooden structures like the garrison’s church, dwellings for the troops, warehouses and water reservoirs. Fort Amsterdam was a heavily armed fortification stocked with 13 guns, four of which were heavy and were located in the southwestern bastion. Since its construction in 1635, Fort Amsterdam has defended the island against many invading armies, but these days it serves the community of Curaçao by housing its governmental offices. Although it's an exciting piece of local heritage and a potential tourist attraction, for some inexplicable reason it's very poorly promoted
